ZIMSEC O Level Combined Science Notes: Food Preservation
- A lot of the fresh food that humans eat is perishable
- This is because this food is also food for bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms
- If fresh perishable food is left out in the open it will soon deteriorate and decompose
- It is these micro-organisms that are responsible for the rotting/going bad of perishable foods
- They feed grow and feed on this food causing it to decay
Conditions necessary for food to decay
- Bacteria which makes food go bad requires the following conditions in order to thrive:
- Warmth/a favorable temperature
- Oxygen/Air
- Moisture or water
