  • A lot of the fresh food that humans eat is perishable
  • This is because this food is also food for bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms
  • If fresh perishable food is left out in the open it will soon deteriorate and decompose
  • It is these micro-organisms that are responsible for the rotting/going bad of perishable foods
  • They feed grow and feed on this food causing it to decay

Conditions necessary for food to decay

  • Bacteria which makes food go bad requires the following conditions in order to thrive:
  • Warmth/a favorable temperature
  • Oxygen/Air
  • Moisture or water
