Female reproductive system
- Ovaries-there are two ovaries
- Their function is to produce and release ova (plural of ovum) during ovulation
- Ovaries also secrete the hormones oestrogen and progesterone
- these control the development of the ova and the thickening of the uterus lining
- Oviduct/Fallopian tube-is for the passage of ova from the ovaries to the uterus.
- Fertilisation takes place in the fallopian tubes
- Uterus/womb-is a muscular chamber where the foetus/embryo develops
- Cervix-is a ring of muscles at the neck of the uterus, which closes during pregnancy
- and dilates during birth
- Vagina-for the passage of sperms into the uterus and is also the birth canal
- Fertilisation-it refers to the fusion of the male and female gametes (sex cells) nuclei to form a zygote
- It takes place in the oviduct/fallopian tube
