ZIMSEC O Level Combined Science Notes: Experiment: Testing tooth cleaning agent
Aim: To test the properties of teeth cleaning agents
Materials: various brands of toothpaste, pH paper, microscopes, slat, bicarbonate of soda, lid bottles/suitable containers for the toothpaste
Method
- Examine toothpaste under a microscope to compare the particle size of the various abrasiveness
- Spread the toothpaste over a smooth surface
- Touch test it to compare the roughness
- Test the pH of various toothpaste brands by dissolving a small amount in distilled water and dipping pH ppaer into the solution
- Read the pH from off the universal colour code chart
Results and Observations
- Most toothpaste have an abrasive quality to them although this varies from toothpaste to toothpaste
- Toothpaste are bases (i.e. have a base of more than 7)
