One of the most prominent Second Chimurenga heroes: Dubiso Dabengwa passed away yesterday. Mr Dabengwa was in Kenya at the time a stop he had made on his way back to Zimbabwe from India. He was returning from seeking treatment in the Asian country as he was suffering from liver complications.

The ZAPU stalwart was 79. He is survived by his wife Zodwa and their children.

Second Chimurenga hero and after

During the War of Independence, Dabengwa was intelligence chief of the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Party (ZIPRA).

During the Zimbabwean Civil war of 1980-1987 Dabengwa was detained subsequently held incommunicado at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. He was accused of planning to overthrow the government of the then Zimbabwe Prime Minister Robert Mugabe.

Dabengwa was imprisoned alongside another ZIPRA commander Lookout Masuku, who died in prison.
